guy: 'so what's so good about nottingham?'
me: 'well, when we were there, a policewoman got shot!'
[silence]
me: 'but don't worry, not like she died or anything. it was on the national news. there was a guy breaking into a house and she caught him and then he shot her.'
guy: '............. so as long as i don't break into houses in nottingham while there are cops around i should be fine?'
me: 'yeah. works well as a general life principle, really.'
guy: 'ah.'
me: 'but it's great!!!! living life on the edge, walking down the street thinking, 'will i get shot? won't i?''

then the guy left. presumably to find another uni to go to where imminent death doesn't await him.
