it's all about expectations.

thank god it's over.

that's not the reaction i usually have at the end of a show, but porgy and bess did that to me. we thought, 'hey, porgy and bess, it's famous, the gershwins wrote it, and it's got 'summertime', one of my fave songs in it, it must be good!!' wrong, wrong wrong.

they. sang. everything. EVERYTHING. there were maybe 3 spoken lines in the whole 3 hours. yes, 3 hours. and there was no dramatic tension, even though it featured murder, an unlikely love story, rape and a lot of people drowning in a storm. i think it's cuz they were singing all the time. they didn't have enough breath to struggle with any energy or passion, even when they were about to be raped.

okay, so maybe the criticisms i have were just because i didn't realise it was an opera, not a musical, but still!!!

it was just quite boring. i fell asleep a bit in the second half- i think during the bit where people were singing about lots of people drowning- and when i woke up i started thinking about other things i could have done with the money for the ticket- 6-7 choc souffles at max brenner's was one.

but hey, now i know what porgy and bess is like!!!
